About me
Dr Carolina Scarpa
I am a medical doctor specialising in psychiatry. I graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Milano-Bicocca and specialised in Psychiatry at ASST Fatebenefratelli Sacco in Milan.
During my training I gained clinical experience across the main psychiatric conditions, in particular in the treatment of resistant forms of depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder and bipolar disorder at the Depressive Disorders Treatment Centre of Sacco Hospital.
In recent years I have also trained in psychotherapy, completing the Specialist Master's in Cognitive-Behavioural Psychotherapy at the Studi Cognitivi school.
Alongside my private practice as a psychiatrist, I am medical director and psychiatrist at the SMI (Integrated Multidisciplinary Service) in Treviglio, an addiction treatment centre accredited by the Lombardy Region.

How I work
My approach rests on three pillars.
- 01
Listening without judgement
All my consultations are free of judgement. Patients should feel welcome and at ease sharing their difficulties, which is already hard enough.
- 02
Scientific evidence
My treatment recommendations are based on the available scientific evidence and up-to-date guidelines, not on personal preferences or schools of thought.
- 03
Decisions shared with the patient
It is essential to me that patients take part in the decisions. If there are doubts about the prescribed treatment, they need to come up and be cleared. I always try to share clinical indications, expected benefits, side effects and alternative treatments.

FAQ
Before you write.
For most outpatient conditions, yes: a psychiatric assessment is based on the consultation. If tests, an in-person visit or a public service turn out to be needed along the way, I will tell you and refer you.
Yes. After the visit I issue a medical report that you can send to your GP to get the prescriptions, or take directly to a pharmacy, where it is valid as a private (‘white’) prescription and you pay for the medication yourself.
No. Although I trained in cognitive-behavioural psychotherapy, my work is psychiatric assessment and pharmacological treatment. I use psychotherapeutic techniques within the visit when useful, and if a course of psychotherapy is indicated I refer you to a colleague, while I continue to look after the psychiatric side.
